VoIP in rural Ghana 2006

Wolf @ 3:49 pm February 15, 2007

VoIP on  in rural Ghana November 2006 - Wireless Ghana is pleased to announce that we have successfully implemented VoIP onto our flagship network in the Akwapim district of Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The VoIP is available at three locations, and allows communications between two community centers in Akropong and one in Apirede, spanning a 6km distance. An application called SJPhone is running the frontend and doing IP to IP dials across our CuWIN-based WiFi mesh network.

VoIP marks the first service Wireless Ghana has implemented to work solely on its LAN. The service is available at all times that electricity is available, even when our satellite Internet uplink is not. As VoIP technology becomes more mainstream the teams at Wireless Ghana aim to deploy such services with greater scope.

Dharamsala Workshop wiki online

Klavs @ 9:05 pm December 14, 2006

The ressources from the WSFII-workshops in Dharamsala that followed the Airjaldi Summit are now online.

During the workshops the participiants sat up a wiki for sharing their ideas, posting knowledge and developing best practices where possible.

The wiki was set up locally on a laptop which was connected to the airjaldi intranet to limit the use of expensive bandwidth to the public internet. After the workshop we have reconstructed the wiki on our public server at DIIRWB.

Some of the topics covered by the wiki are:

  • Knowledge / Workshop Ressources, including a discussion of spectrum regulations in different part of the word and drafting a decission-tree of which WiFi-standards to use.
  • Notes from the Wireless Roadshow - an educational workshop in the workshop.
  • The first steps of forming Focus Groups for the developing continents Asia, Africa and South/Latin-America.
  • Also a presentation of the particpiants is available.
  • And a lot of links, sporadic notes etc.

This wiki from the workshop will eventually become part of the main wsfii wiki.

Other local resources were also present at the workshop. An image gallery was build during the workshop and this gallery is now also online.

We are happy to have the opportunity to host both applications at our servers on DIIRWB.
