The Dutch city of Amsterdam has committed itself back in 2003 to running fiber to every home and business. After some years of fighting especially the EU system, the project has 2006 started with 40,000 homes, or about 10% of the city.

By 2010, everyone in the city will have access to 100 mb/s data fiber and another fiber for all kinds of TV. There will be a wide variety of private, ngo and community sector services–in other words, competition and choice.
